Trip to John's House
Today was so damn boring. I had Chinese for 3 hours. Then... There was a 2 hour lunch break in between because we had our Annual Track and Field Championships (a.k.a. Sports Day) later on at 2.40 p.m.. Therefore we went to John Sim's house to see see, look look, touch touch, take take... (No, just kidding!)
While John and I was waiting for Mary, Sourisha and Grace to finish their council meeting at the foyer, we had a little chat. I was feeling desperately hungry, but didn't want to fork out money for my lunch.
Me (smiling devilishly) : Is there anything to eat in your house?
John (dreaming) : Yes, in the past...
Me (What the heck?!) : What? In the past? You mean you guys don't eat?
John (laughs) : No... Erm, let me think... I think have... Erm, chicken rice...
Me (shocked, because I wonder which mother would make chicken rice at home, or even buy chicken rice to store in their houses like canned food) : Chicken rice???
John (looking as if his mum really did that) : Yeah. Loy Kee Chicken Rice.
Me (was thinking, "Chey...") : Oh... I didn't mean that. I meant, is there anything to eat in your kitchen fridge...?
John (in a blur) : Erm, we have juicers... Lots of juicers...
I don't know if I had mistaken "juices" for "juicers", but at that time I thought he was kidding with me.
I frowned because I thought that he wasn't answering my question at all. I was thinking, "Why do I want a juicer, or even juicers for? I don't wanna make my own fruit juice... I don't want to wash the juicers after that!!!"
Me: Erm, ok... anything else? (I want some snacks, food, tibits, or even something munchable)
John: Erm, I think there's ginger...
Ok, I think I've had enough. Why do I want to munch on a ginger for? If it's gingerbreadman I don't mind... Ginger of all things!!! What was John thinking about when he was talking to me?
I walked off to buy some canteen food... I think I deserve more than a ginger. But before I was even halfway through my food, Grace and gang came back and we were on the way to his house.
Do you know that his house is DAMN FAR from IJC? We walked and walked and walked for don't know how long. Finally after walking for God-knows-how-long, we arrived at his shabby (he said so to me) condo because his kitchen was under renovation.
The first thing I did was to explore his house. I saw 5 HUGE frames with certificates inside, for excellence in piano-playing by John and his elder brother, Mark. I know nothing about piano, so I asked Sourisha what the certificates were supposed to mean. She said that they were awarded to the Sim brothers for excellence in piano SOLO performance.
Wow man. All I could do was to awe. Thats because I know nothing about music.
Then I walked to the balcony. I couldnt enter because it was wet and it was the place where they hung their wet laundry to dry. I looked to my right and saw some potatoes, garlic and onions! I then shouted to John, You lied! I see onions!
Then I made my way to the dining table. On the way, I bypassed this narrow corridor which led to Johns grandparents and Marks room. I then saw this elderly in a wheelchair with no hair. There was a maid holding on to the wheelchair.
The elderly was amused with my shouting and looked at me in this strange way. I thought that I had disturbed the elderlys rest, hence I said Sorry. I then ran up the stairs.
John let us view his room. It was really damn small, NOT counting the fact that he had some extension like a balcony and a BATHROOM TO HIMSELF. I thought that it was damn cool, because all my life I had always wanted one (but you cant have one in HDB flats). But his room was really smaller than mine.
I was really amazed at the number of books his bookshelf held. There was, like, Lee Kuan Yews Memoir in BOTH ENGLISH & CHINESE. I then asked him if he had finished reading every single book that he had. Luckily he replied me one percent.
I asked him if his grandparents stayed with him. He said yes and I told him that I saw his grandfather. Mary was looking at me in a queer way, as if I had encountered a ghost. The others were like, Errr Ok.
Then he led us to his parents room. There was a bathtub in addition to a shower corner. I then asked Sue, Why do they need a shower corner if they already had a bathtub? She laughed and shook her head I wonder what that meant.
Usually, there would be an extra large picture of a couples marriage photo on the wall, but in Johns parents room, we saw a HUGE picture that showed them with Mark and John, wearing scholars outfit. It was his mum who graduated. Wow. It was something different from the usual.
Then we went back to the dining table downstairs. He then remembered that he needed to serve us drinks (because thirsty Grace Chua was nagging for it). I had a cup of lemonade. Not bad It was the first time I drank Floridas Natural.
Mark suddenly came home. He was absolutely shocked to see that John had brought us home. I suspect that Mark was actually shocked to learn that John mixed and had only 6 close girl-friends (Me, Mary, Grace Wong, Grace Chua, Sourisha and Sue) Sigh Wahahaha. But we said Hi anyway and he was quite warm to us.
He then asked John why we were in the house at such an early time of the day. John said that it was Sports Day. He then asked why we had our Sports Day so late in the year. No one could come up with an answer, so I said, We had our Promos. Grace then rolled her eyes. Did I say something wrong?
Then John took out some photos for us to see. Seriously, John was damn cute when he was young. At around 2 years old, I think. Then one maid came out to iron the clothes. Then another came out... I was like, They have 2 maids in such a small condo? But anyway, I still envied them having 2 maids.
Then the grandfather came out to watch TV. I then realized that the elderly in the wheelchair was actually the grandmother No wonder Mary was staring at me. But I was damn relieved that I didnt call out Hi, uncle when I first met the grandmother. It would have hurt her So I greeted the grandfather. He appeared to be a nice old man.
John later told me that his grandmother was bald because of some medicine that she took. And that she didnt have cancer. I was so happy for him. Serious.
Not long after, Mark learnt that we had to leave for IJC, so he decided to play a piece on the piano for us. We were like, so delighted. Thats because Grace Wong and John refused to play for us. We finally got to enjoy some music.
Do you know that on the piano cover, when lifted up, there is this little extension which you can use to hold your song sheets, or rather, music scores? It was empty but out, because Grace Wong had initially tried to play the ballade that she had just learnt. So Mark walked over and kind of slammed that extension back to its original position and sat down to play.
Which meant that he did not need any music scores AT ALL.
Then he started playing Oh man, I almost started singing. Luckily I caught myself. He was like, swaying his head to the music as he played. Mary told me that it came naturally when one enjoys playing a particular piece. He had played Tong Hua by Guang Liang. It was really a nice performance.
When he finished, we really applauded. Erm, initially I didnt know whether we should applaud or not, because if I did so, it would seem odd. But anyway we did it all the same. I then said that it was Very nice, because I cant say that it was fabulous or something like that BECAUSE I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC NOR PIANOS. It was really nice, from an ordinary persons point of view.
Then we left for school.
Wow man. It was really an enjoyable afternoon. But I bet you guys wanted to know how Mark looked like, right?
Well John had a smooth face. Mark had a rough one. Mark was taller than John by, maybe, 20 cm? I dont know. I didnt measure. Mark too, had a deep voice. And when he speaks, it was as if you were listening to sound waves produced by stereo speakers. Johns voice wasnt like that. Mark gave me a feeling that he was a potential professor-to-be, but seriously speaking, the 2 brothers had the look of a scholar.
I wished I had that look.
Ok, fine. Haha. I think I like the Sim family. At least they appeared nice and warm. But I wouldnt know for sure behind my back. =P
