Rag Day 2
Ok, people not in NUS are kinda at a loss of what is Rag Day. Actually, we call it Rag and Flag Day. Flag day is a day which we sell flags (duh) and raise donations. This year, we are supporting more than 20 beneficiaries. And then, to thank the public for their generous support, we put up a performance for them to enjoy. And the day we put up this performance is named Rag Day.
Actually, on Rag Day itself, I heard from NUSSU's (NUS Student Union) president that Rag Day is also a day for the public to see how creative we are... And to show them how vibrant our life is. Actually, I don't agree with the vibrant part. It's more of hectic. I ask you, ever since I got involved in the building of the float, since when have I been free? Not a day!!!
Ok, back to the topic. So each faculty (for example, Arts and Social Science, Science, Engineering, etc) and each hall (the place where students stay on campus) put up a performance and compete with each other for the different awards. Yeah... So this year, it was the first time Rag Day was moved from NUS grounds to Padang!!! (As if I would be excited.)
So on that day, we (Pharmacy students) took a bus to Padang at 12.30 pm. So hot!!! When we reached there, I saw rows of seats. I thought they were for us! But hell no. We were told to sit on the grass (WTH) and the place we were allocated was so far away from the stage that there was no point for us to be present at Padang. Serious!
So the hot sun (the one which burnt my nose) shone on us and some people took out their umbrellas to get some shade. Of course, I took out my super duper big umbrella (Grace should know, LOL) and wow-ed the people around me with its size. I was so proud of my umbrella. LOL.
So the event was started off at 2 plus. I was like, what the heck? Why ask us to come SO EARLY when the thing would only start like, 2 hours later?!?! And President Nathan came at 3 plus...
Ok, so initially we had 2 people on stage to sing... They wanted to create some publicity for the movie, 881. They sang quite ok... I forgot what happened next, but soon the event began officially. Haha.
The halls were the first to present. I really wasn't interested in what they had in store. I was more concerned with Pharmacy's performance 'cos I had helped to build the float. Haha. And Pharmacy was arranged to be the last to perform... At 6.30 pm. Oh, just great.
I really couldn't take the heat. So Janice and I went to the back of the audience seats where there were stalls selling cool drinks. Man, I guess selling drinks in tents were the worst jobs ever. I think the temperature was quite high, such that the 3 guys there were sweating so much that they looked as if they just came out of the swimming pool. Literally drenched!
So we sat on the metal rods and drank our drinks. I bought chrysanthemum tea!!! Haha. It became my favourite ever since I went to AJ. Haha. So we sat there till 5 plus... I wanted to squeeze to the sides of the VIP seats (they had the centre view of the entire stage!!!) so as to get a place to look at the performace by Pharmacy.
Ok, I don't want to go on anymore. I'll just show the pictures now. The performance wasn't as good as what I had imagined it to be ('cos I knew the plot already). Kinda disappointed, but oh well. It was our first time after 20 odd years. At least we, the rag people, put in our best.
Went back home at 7 plus. I think I cheered so much that since then, I had a sore throat and the whole illness cycle cascaded. Argh. So much for Rag.
Above: The dancers... Pictures are all taken from Pharmacy website.
3 above pictures: Rehearsing, I guess.
2 above: Setting up the float when it was Pharmacy's turn to perform. Below: Dancers performing.
Nothing much to see, really... Just wanted to show you guys how the background looked like, 'cos that was the part I really wanted to see. And the girl in rags is the lead. She was just a cleaning maid with dreams to become an artist of a performing troupe. She was found dancing at the backstage by the manager and thus was groomed to be the star of the troupe. And hence on, tickets were always sold out for her performances.
Someone feedback-ed to me that she thought it was about some haunted story 'cos the background looked spooky. #$#$%#$&*!@^# It was my effort!!! LOL.
